Still working on my first playthrough of Earthbound while reading Ken Baumann’s Earthbound. It’s pretty surreal; I’m playing through for the first time ever, he’s playing through for the first time in almost two decades. His experiences are framed by misty memories and youthful connections, while mine are framed by years of literary and film theory studies.
I had conversations about a friend’s experience with Mother 3 before I ever picked up Earthbound, specifically discussing it’s rhythm battle system and the peculiar humor. So I feel like my personal context for the game is pretty jaded/informed by historical and popular culture presentations of it… I think I even read Zac Gorman’s comics before I ever played the game.
If there’s ever been a way to forge nostalgia, I think I’m doing it.
